First, you open up photoshop and create a new file
A blank file will open, as shown above
Then to open up a picture file, you go to File > Open and select the picture file that you wish to open
It will then open the file like this
As you can see, another layer is automatically created as you open up the picture file. Next, you want to change the name of the second layer which is currently labelled as 'Layer 1'. As I want to place a picture of the Arc de Triomphe, I double click 'Layer 1' and name it as Arc de triomphe
Next I want to place the second picture onto the new layer layer that i have just named. I go to File > Place and open up my second picture file and placed it where I wanted it to be
To save the file as a JPEG file, go to File > Save As.. and select the format as JPEG. You can adjust the quality of the saved picture but for this demo I'll just save it as medium. You can always change the format differently according to your preferences.
So there you have it, a basic introduction to Layers. I'll post up some more things after I master Photoshop a bit more :)
